Appalachian Trailside Cabin: Rustic, Near McAfee Knob

One of the best values on Airbnb! Cozy cottage, full of character. Absolutely loved the proximity to the post office, the farmers market, the sustainability center, and of course, the trail heads. Highly recommend! Can’t wait to go back.

We really enjoyed our stay in Catawba! The house is thoughtfully renovated, and it is cozy and conveniently located close to a fabulous trail-- our hike to McAfee's Knob was a highlight of our trip! The house was a lovely place to relax and refresh, and we appreciated how easy it was to get to downtown Roanoke. It was a memorable and enjoyable trip!

We enjoyed our stay. The place was mostly clean minus the dishes so we didn’t use them. The only real issue was the the instructions in the Airbnb app was different than what was posted on welcome book in the house.

A great spot with some spectacular hiking right nearby. We were comfortable and enjoyed hiking, evening fireflies and quiet days. Kitchen was well stocked and bedrooms were comfortable. Thanks for a great stay.

This cabin has a nicely updated living, kitchen and small bathroom space. The bedrooms are comfortable, but smaller with limited closet areas. The location of this property is directly off of a major road, so we found the morning traffic to be a bit noisy when sitting outside on their front porch. The traffic noise did die down over the course of the day. We did find it was close to popular trails but further away (20-25 minutes) from Roanoke. We are always grateful to Airbnb owners for allowing us to enjoy a vacation with our two dogs! Thank you so very much!

Gem of a place! So happy to find a dog friendly spot in this prime location and then have it be super comfy and modern on the inside. We were able to get to Va Tech easily and also the best trail in the Blue Ridge! Hope to come back again! Thanks for being pet friendly!

We selected Hunter's home primarily for its location to nearby hiking favorites. We were not disappointed! Additionally, Hunter actually took time out to followup on questions we had. The home was clean, quiet, wifi worked, and all appliances presented as new. We have no hesitation to return to this gem!

It was perfect. Close to Salem and restaurants and grocery stores, EV charging (at Hart Kia). Loved the goat farm in the back, sunrises over the mountains and horses across from the Post Office. Close to several hiking areas. Very, very clean with fairly well equipped kitchen, laundry and bathroom. Ample sheets, towels and supplies. Nice restoration. We will be back!

My son and I enjoyed our stay! We had our dogs with us and the location worked out well for taking them on hikes with us. The location was in a good spot to visit friends in Roanoke and Blacksburg. Would love to stay there again the next time we visit!

Everything about this place was great! Everything was modern, super clean, and worked great. We loved the decor of the property, and the goats outside were an added bonus! The location was perfect for the hiking that we wanted to do. Hunter and his team were super responsive and easy to communicate with. No problems what-so-ever, and we would highly recommend Hunter and this property.

Our stay here was wonderful! Some of our hiking and outdoor plans fell through due to flash flooding during the weekend, which made the place we stayed at even more important since we had to stay in mostly. Everything was very clean and neat, and they left snacks and prepared everything for us that we may need. We had a great stay, enjoyed the peaceful setting, and the company of the goats next door. 😃

We had a fantastic stay for 4 nights during our hiking adventures to McAfee Knob and Dragon’s Tooth. The cabin is so cozy and clean, and our hosts made sure that we had everything we needed and more! Have already recommended it to my niece - a fellow hiker. We would love to return in the Fall and explore more of the area. It’s a short drive to Salem, Roanoke, or even Blacksburg. Great place to stay with some pretty cool stuff to do just minutes away in several directions.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay. We came with the goal of hiking Virginia's Triple Crown over two days, which we did thanks to how close this home was to all three trailheads (McAfee Knob, Dragon's Tooth and Tinker Cliffs). We were able to easily walk to the McAfee Knob Trailhead from the house and the other two hikes were only 5-10 minute drives away. The house itself was updated, clean and adorable on the inside, with plenty of kitchen space and equipment to cook dinner after a long day of hiking. Nights were quiet, with beautiful clear skies to star gaze. I would highly recommend this home for anyone wanting a quiet, peaceful getaway close to some incredible hiking. We will definitely be back!

We stayed to hike up to McAfee Knob and were able to find our way around with no problem. Hunter gave us some great tips with the trailhead under construction. House is very modern and updated. We cooked a big breakfast and made a pot of coffee - the hosts have every amenity you need for a comfortable stay. Watched a free movie, enjoyed comfortable beds, and the quiet. At night, the sky is filled with stars! The hosts are very accommodating and responsive! Definitely will return!

He also worked with us getting in a little early. Hiked dragon tooth trail and McAfee Knob. Totally worth it and would rent again. Very nice cabin

We had a wonderful stay.

As close as you can get to some of the best hikes in the area. It took us 6 minutes to drive to the trail head of Dragon's Tooth! Highly recommend if you're doing a hiking trip and want a peaceful, close stay

We had a great stay. The home was clean and comfortable and had all the essentials. Location was also great - some excellent hikes very close by and easy access to the interstate for traveling further afield. Would definitely recommend!

My husband and I stayed 4 nights while dropping my daughter off at VT, about a 30 minute drive. The cabin was a quiet get away in a beautiful area, very close to hiking trails and just a short drive 10-15 minutes to Salem & Roanoke to dine at restaurants. This updated cabin was clean, very comfortable and we would definitely stay there again.

Lovely home in a rural community-even with nearby neighbors, it felt very private. Very comfortable beds and the home was spotless!

Great stay near McAfee Knob. Our family needed a space to stay to visit with my husband. He is doing a thru hike on the AT. We had a perfect stay. Pet friendly, super clean and comfortable, modern touches with charging stations all throughout. We wanted to do McAfee Knob as a family and the home is just a few miles down the road from the 311 parking. We were also close to a brewery and local shopping. Our host was in touch with us and felt available if I needed him. We never did, instructions to get in were easy and we had everything we could need. (Shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergent, fabric softener, tin foil, cooking supplies, etc) Thanks!

Great escape for the city in the secluded Mountains. Awesome place to relax or take a hike and plenty to do in the surrounding areas. Perfect place for R and R.

Fantastic space! We were in town for my son’s graduation from Va Tech but we’ll definitely be back! There’s just too much to do in the immediate vicinity (it’s basically ground zero for beautiful hikes in VA), and we want to come back when we have a little more time to enjoy the surroundings. Cozy and comfortable for a group of four. Highly recommended!

Hunter’s cabin was absolutely perfect! It was in a great location, peaceful surroundings, and so cute on the inside with all of the essentials!

The Catawba Cabin looked great on the photos, but it actually exceeded our expectations. This place has recently been completely renovated and has a nice and functional bathroom, comfortable beds with good quality mattresses, a well-equipped kitchen with everything we needed, a nice gas grill on the back porch and overall a very cozy setting. There was a fire pit out front with firewood available, but we didn't find time to make use of this. The binder with suggested things to do was very helpful and nicely layouted. There were snacks and even a bottle of red wine for us. As a little plus there were power charging cables for all types of devices in every room. The cabin was secluded and private, and we enjoyed the quietness. The surroundings are truly spectacular an we particularly enjoyed the McAfee Knob hike on a beautiful day. Hunter was proactive and responsive throughout and was an excellent host. We can give Hunter and the Catawba Cabin our best recommendations!

Perfect home base if you are looking to hike The Triple Crown. Whole place was extremely clean. Comfy beds. Well stocked kitchen. Loved our stay!

We had a lovely month in what we called our little country house. It was far from rustic, with a lovely modern kitchen ad bathroom, attractive decor, and a wonderful yard which our dog, Max, loved. We were only about 20 minutes from downtown Roanoke and even closer to Salem. All in all we had a lovely time in the Catawba Valley.

This was a lovely place to stay for hiking in the Catawba area!! Felt safe and comfortable during our stay. We would definitely stay again!

We LOVED our stay at The Cabin!! The house itself is charming, clean, and welcoming. We enjoy being outside the city and off the beaten path, and this place delivered while still being less than 20 mins from town. We were delighted to find out we were a THREE minute drive to McAfee’s Knob-the most popular and scenic hike in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Last and certainly not least, our host Hunter was incredibly friendly, helpful, and timely with communication or answering questions. He was open and easy to get a hold of, and had a great binder with local recommendations and a little history on the cabin. We loved our stay and would absolutely stay again or recommend to friends. We can’t thank Hunter enough for helping to make our visit as great as it was.

Much thought and care went into the renovation of this cabin. Adorable! Close to hikes and beautiful drives. You can’t go wrong staying here!

Quaint little place close to hiking trails. Was easy to find but closest restaurants and stores were at least 30 minutes away. The house was clean but there was very little space for your clothing or even place your suitcase. We did enjoy our stay but were not at the house much since we were visiting our son at VT which was a 35 minute drive from the house.

This is by far my favorite Airbnb experience ever. It was clean, cute, cozy, serene, close to the gorgeous mountains, good food, and the neighbor goats and cats were adorable! All the extra touches to help make my dog comfy were lovely as well. I felt very safe here as a solo traveler. I thoroughly enjoyed winding down on the front porch with a glass of wine after hiking or exploring Roanoke/Salem. The hosts were friendly, and even left me a very thoughtful welcome gift that was much needed after a 13 hour drive. I appreciated the recommendations from them, especially about the local hikes, Sweet Donkey Coffee (so good I went three times), and Farmburgeusa. I know a lot of people get excited about McAfee, but don't sleep on Sawtooth Ridge! There's no clear signage, but from the same parking lot as McAfee, go south down the AT instead of North. It's only about 1-2 hours with doggie sniff breaks, but the views are incredible. The only con is that I had to leave.

Everything is great for a short get away trip. McAfee Knob and Dragon Tooth are close, the rooms are cozy, clean and pet friendly, and the neighbors are friendly.

We fully enjoyed our stay! This cozy place is pefect for a couple's get away. The peaceful country setting was close enough to Roanoke to be convenient while still offering access to plenty of hiking and biking trails. The house was spotless and well put together. Hunter was friendly and responsive to our messages. I'm sure we will be back for another visit!

Perfect location for hiking - especially for the triple crown .

Wonderful experience. We parked in the McAfee Knob p lot and had no trouble finding a spot (we arrived around 8:30 on a Saturday). The hike to the summit was amazing. There is a also a shuttle to the trailhead that is walking distance from the cabin. The cabin was comfortable, clean, and exactly as described. Hunter was very responsive and answered all of my questions. The cabin is very close to both Roanoke and Salem, so this is a great spot! We will be back.

Stayed here for VT graduation. Clean, comfy and reasonably priced compared to Blacksburg airbnbs!

We stayed here as a home base while visiting family in the valley. It was a perfect spot to chill out, with lovely views out the many windows and a simply stocked kitchen for breakfast. Comfortable bed and charming interior. Recommended!

Excellent location for hiking McAfee Knob. Clean, comfortable, and well appointed. Loved that it was dog friendly. An easy 15 minute ride to restaurants and groceries. The grill was handy for making quick dinners. Highly recommend.

We really liked it, Hunter’s renovation were done very well. Super location for hiking the trails or getting away from the city a little bit. There isn’t anything super close beside a convenience store/gas station which is about a two miles down the road if you need to sneak away for snacks or essentials if you forget to bring anything, like we did. Overall, we appreciated the quiet and beautiful sunrises. Thank you Hunter for sharing your space with us.

Catawba Cabin was the perfect place for our quick trip to hike McAfee Knob. Really nicely restored, great decoration and design, with all the amenities you could possibly need. Easy access getting in and trouble free communication.

This house is in a GREAT location - it’s close to McAfee Knob but also a bunch of other smaller trails that link up with the AT - all within walking distance. It was very convenient for us and our dog to simply hop on the trail. It was also easy for me to get to both Roanoke and Blacksburg for work. Inside, it seems the hosts thought of everything - from towels within reach as soon as you get out of the shower to a slow feeder and water bowl for the dog (we forgot ours!), we really did have everything we needed. We would definitely stay here again.

I had an amazing time in this beautiful cabin. Hunter was very helpful and I loved the views and hot cocoa at night and a lovely cup of coffee watching an amazing sunrise and sunset. I loved the town, people so nice and helpful. I had the opportunity to hike and go Around downtown Areas. Hunter had a very nice and helpful book with some of the most popular and also beautiful places around. Thank you for everything and I look forward coming back and visit your beautiful, peaceful, and cozy cabin.

We needed a quiet spot to rest after being on the road for 3 weeks. This cabin was spotless, close to Salem and Roanoke (never been) and some great dining spots. Hunter left a detailed list of hiking spots, sites to see and restaurants. The vacation cabin had everything we needed and was pet friendly. He even supplied blankets for the dog! We hope to return when the weather is a bit friendlier!

The house had everything we needed; pots and pan, utensils. They did a great job fixing it up and it was very nice. Location was only a short drive in for groceries. Definitely worth the stay.

Once again, we had a great stay and have made Hunter’s place our monthly rental when we come up! Always clean, well stocked down to the extra trash bags , variety of teas, coffee made available, soap and even laundry detergent and fabric softener sheets ! This place is awesome and hopefully I don’t have to share with any of y’all:-) But truthfully Hunter and Shawna have done a fabulous job !

Hunter’s cabin was simply marvelous. It was very beautiful inside. Everything we needed and even wanted was provided. He did an amazing job decorating the inside. The outside is also amazing. The outside furniture was amazing. The pit was perfect. The family pictures posted on the walls was a perfect touch. I was able to bring my fur baby which was a PLUS. The Mcafee knob trailhead is within walking distance. The neighbors were very friendly and it’s very quiet and peaceful here. Hunter is definitely a super host. I’ve already recommended this cabin to several of my friends and family. I’m planning my next trip to return back here to this wonderful cabin. My family and I felt like we were at home. Thanks again Hunter.

Excellent quiet location, easy access to AT and other hiking!

The only complaint I have is that I can’t leave Hunter 10 stars for this experience ! The house was well appointed with everything you could hope to have As we have family in the area our family has decided to rent this home for the long term for each visit every month! This is an awesome place- a must see !

Hunter was a great host who was extremely responsive to any questions...often within minutes! The cabin was very comfortable and super clean. This was our first Air BnB experience and we were extremely pleased. If you are thinking of coming down to the area to do some hiking and maybe do the triple crown as we did then this is the place to use! We would definitely consider renting it again!

Great spot and unit, very spacious! Awesome kitchen. Very close To Mcafee trailhead, about 15 min drive to Salem, 20 to Roanoke. Would have been nice to have some more basics (coffee, ziplocks, some spices, basic toiletries and a Brita filter for the well water). Other than that - very lovely unit with updated and nice amenities/utilities. We loved sitting on the porch with coffee and tea. Hoping to come back and hike more in the spring!!
